Tips for Evaluating Reviews Effectively

If you’ve ever taken time to read through a multitude of reviews, you know they can range from being helpful to being laughable, so here are some tips on how to evaluate reviews.

  • Take the extreme reviews (both good and bad) with a grain of salt. In fact, toss them out of consideration.

  • Read the overall tone of the reviews — are they mostly positive or negative.

  • Prioritize the content. Focus on the reviews that are most relative to YOUR top concerns. For example, if you don’t care if there is a specific amenity that isn’t important to you, disregard reviews about that specific amenity.

  • Is the review balanced? Does it include both pros and cons of a service, product, or place? Reviews that indicate that others may have had a different experience bring a level of objectivity to the topic.

  • Is the review focused on the facts and does it leave out personal references? Is it well-written, concise?

  • How many reviews are there? If there are just a few it’s more difficult to determine the full picture. Look for reviews on another site for the same item.

  • Be aware that there may be false reviews among the legitimate. Educate yourself about the red flags indicating a false review.
